Matinta is a being from Brazilian folklore, also known as Matinta Pereira, who is an old woman who transforms into a bird at night to whistle incessantly on the rooftops. Legend says that she frightens the residents and only stops if someone makes a promise (usually tobacco, but it can also be coffee or cachaça), which she comes to collect the next day. If the promise is not fulfilled, Matinta can bring bad luck, illness, or even death.
